Dr. Brian Ewert, president of Marshfield Clinic, hooked up the seatbelt that came as part of a roll-over prevention structure he recently had added to his hobby farm tractor for safety. The clinic’s National Farm Medicine Center recently announced funding which will allow it to reimburse eligible farmers up to 70 percent for retrofitting ROPS equipment on their tractors.

Tractor roll-over accidents are the leading cause of death on farms, and roll-over prevention structures are the most effective known safety intervention.
With those two pieces of information — and more than $43,000 raised in donations Sept. 20 at its annual Auction of Champions — the National Farm Medicine Center in Marshfield is ready to move forward on an initiative to help farmers retrofit their older tractors with roll-bars or cabs.
