The University of Minnesota will hold an open house from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Southern Research and Outreach Center in Waseca, Minn. Participants will learn about the center’s research, participate in fun activities and view exhibits for all ages, backgrounds and interests.
“Taste as You Learn” exhibits will feature the chemopreventive café, pork tasting, soybean snacks and milk shakes provided by the Waseca County American Dairy Association. Master Gardeners will be on hand to identify weed, disease and insect problems and offer recommendations for control. Attendees also can purchase locally produced honey, learn about the Minnesota grape industry and sample local wines and craft beer.
Children can see piglets, calves and other animals, engage in 4-H activities and games and navigate their way through the corn maze. Visitors can ride the horse-drawn trolley and sample and purchase meat and cheeses produced by the University. Door prizes will be awarded, along with with eight grand prize drawings for quarter-pigs fully processed and packaged.
Sweet corn provided by Pinnacle Bird’s Eye Foods and hot dogs will be served. The center is located on the western edge of Waseca on County Road 41. For more information, contact a local or regional Extension office or the SROC at 507-835-3620.
